Italian Interior Minister Comments on Supreme Court Ruling Regarding Migrants

Rome: Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed his viewpoint on the Supreme Court of Cassation’s recent decision, which mandates the government to compensate migrants who were kept aboard a coastguard ship in 2018.

According to Ansa News Agency, Piantedosi stated that while judicial sentences must be respected, they can still be subject to commentary. He emphasized his disagreement with the ruling, aligning with other government members who share the same sentiment. The case in question involved Eritrean migrants who were held on the Diciotti ship due to the closed ports policy implemented by then Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

Piantedosi reiterated that even authoritative sentences from the Supreme Court can be commented on and judged, and he expressed his personal disagreement with the court’s decision. Despite his reservations, he assured that the sentence would be executed with deep respect.
