Italian Deputy Premier Tajani Affirms Commitment to UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon Amid Regional Tensions

Berlin, Germany – Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on Monday that the Italian contingent within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will remain steadfast in its duties despite the ongoing Israeli attacks and external pressures to withdraw.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani emphasized Italy’s unwavering position during a Balkans summit in Berlin, responding to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s calls for UNIFIL withdrawals. He clarified that any decision regarding the repositioning of Italian forces would solely be determined by the United Nations. “We reiterated that what happened is unacceptable. The Italian soldiers are untouchable. We will not leave our positions, also because it is a decision that is up to the United Nations alone. We are not fleeing from places where there are difficulties,” Tajani asserted.

In addition to defending the integrity and role of Italian troops in Lebanon, Tajani highlighted their non-partisan role in the region. “Our soldiers have always done their duty, they are not Hezbollah terrorists,” he added, distancing the Italian forces from any affiliations with militant activities and underscoring their commitment to maintaining peace under the UN banner.
