Italian Collaborations in Earth Sciences Boost Central American Scientific Research

San Salvador: The University of El Salvador recently hosted a significant event, the workshop titled ‘Contributions of Italian Cooperation in Applied Scientific Research in the Earth Sciences’, which took place on 25 and 26 March. The workshop saw participation from authorities and professors of both Italian and Central American universities, aiming to underscore Italian efforts in promoting innovative scientific initiatives in El Salvador.

According to Ansa News Agency, Italian Ambassador to El Salvador, Paolo Emanuele Rozo Sordini, highlighted the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Italy and El Salvador, which spans 164 years. He noted that development cooperation remains a pivotal tool in fostering these relations, emphasizing dialogue and mutual enrichment. The two-day workshop focused on the effective collaboration between Italian and Salvadoran institutions in geology research, particularly within the framework of the Castes project. Ambassador Rozo Sordini mentioned the inauguration of a geosciences laboratory in October 2024 as a testament to Italy’s commitment to enhancing university cooperation and high-level technology.

The project, funded by the Italian Government and executed by the University of Palermo in collaboration with the University of Studies ‘G. d’Annunzio’ Chieti-Pescara, has established a degree course in Earth Sciences with a focus on Geology at the Universidad de El Salvador. This initiative has bolstered scientific training in Geological Sciences, aiding in risk management and the sustainable management of natural resources. Paolo Gallizioli, director of the San Salvador office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, remarked on Italy’s ongoing projects across various sectors in El Salvador, underscoring the significant contributions of seven Italian universities in training and research in crucial areas for the country.
