Iran Demands Release of Businessman Amid Journalist’s Detention

ROME: Iranian authorities have called on Italy to release a Swiss-Iranian businessman detained in Milan, emphasizing the favorable conditions provided to Italian journalist Cecilia Sala during her detention in Tehran’s Evin Prison. The call for reciprocal action comes amid ongoing diplomatic discussions regarding Sala’s case.

According to Ansa News Agency, Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sabouri stated that Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old freelance reporter for Il Foglio, has been granted consular access and communication with her family since her detention. Despite being held in solitary confinement under harsh conditions, including constant light and no mattress, Sabouri emphasized that Sala has received necessary facilities. Her arrest occurred shortly after Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, a businessman facing U.S. terror charges, was taken into custody in Milan.

The Iranian embassy in Rome has urged the Italian government to expedite Abedini’s release and ensure he receives necessary assistance. The call for action underscores the complex interplay of international diplomatic and legal negotiations, as both nations navigate the detainment of their respective citizens.
