Interactive AI Experience at Cambridge’s Museum of Zoology Brings Extinct Animals to Virtual Life

Cambridge: The University of Cambridge’s Museum of Zoology introduces a groundbreaking AI-powered feature, enabling visitors to converse with extinct species, including the dodo. This immersive experience will be available from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, 2024.

According to Anadolu Agency, the AI system allows two-way interactions either through voice or text, with the museum’s specimens responding as if they were alive. This initiative is part of a month-long experiment aimed at enhancing museum learning and visitor engagement through the integration of technology and history.

The initiative features 13 different exhibits and leverages comprehensive data about each specimen, including details about their origin and how they were prepared for display. Jack Ashby, the museum’s assistant director, highlighted the project as “an amazing opportunity for people to test out an emerging technology” within a museum context.

Developed by Nature Perspectives, the technology behind this interaction was designed to offer a un
ique educational tool. “By using AI to simulate non-human perspectives, our technology offers a novel way for audiences to connect with the natural world,” explained Gal Zanir, co-founder of Nature Perspectives. The system also adapts to various age groups and can communicate in more than 20 languages, making it accessible to a diverse audience.

This innovative approach not only revives historical artifacts but also integrates modern technology to create a dynamic learning environment, potentially setting a new standard for museums worldwide.
