Hungary’s Honvéd Cadet Program Bolsters National Security

BUDAPEST: The Honvéd Cadet Program plays a crucial role in enhancing Hungary’s national security, according to the president of the National Defense Sports Association. The announcement was made during a joint conference held by the Ministry of Defense and the Hungarian Defense Forces.

According to KDNP, the success of the Honvéd Cadet Program is evident as approximately half of the students who participate in the program during their secondary school education opt for a military career afterward. István Simicskó, president of the National Defense Sports Association and the parliamentary faction leader for KDNP, highlighted the program’s pivotal role in preparing the youth to face various global challenges such as illegal migration, natural disasters, epidemics, and international conflicts.

Simicskó stressed the importance of national consciousness and transcendental faith, which he believes are under threat from the forces of globalization. The Cadet Program, along with naval programs in primary schools an
d the introduction of national defense subjects in secondary schools, are part of a strategic effort to instill a robust set of values in students. This educational strategy includes the Lázár Mészáros program at the higher education level, aiming to deepen patriotic sentiments primarily through leisure sports activities.

Currently, the cadet program is operational in 47 schools with 11,000 cadets, a significant increase from 1,723 students in 54 institutions in 2018. The government’s ambitious plan is to introduce national defense subjects across all secondary education institutions by 2030. Additionally, the academic curriculum has been aligned to support the needs of the growing domestic defense industry.

The conference also touched on the Zrínyi force development program, initiated in 2016 following the severe refugee crisis. This program focuses on creating a modern military force and includes establishing seven territorial defense regiments and expanding the voluntary reserve force. Attila Géza Takács
, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Honvéd General Staff for Territorial Defense, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in strengthening social relations and enhancing recruitment efficiency.

The efforts of the National Defense Sports Association are seen as instrumental in supporting these national defense objectives by engaging young people in sports and educational activities that promote a sense of duty and readiness to defend the homeland.
