Homeless Individuals Experience Unique Tour of Padua’s Historic Frescoes

Padua: Some 15 homeless individuals in Padua were recently granted a unique opportunity to explore the renowned frescoes housed within the city’s former medieval court, the Palazzo della Ragione. This special tour was organized by the Asilo Notturno del Torresino night shelter, which serves those experiencing homelessness.

According to Ansa News Agency, the event was part of the ‘appointments with beauty’ series, a collaborative effort between Asilo del Torresino and the city’s institutions. The participants were joined on their cultural journey by Andrea Colasio, the municipal councilor for culture, and Margherita Colonnello, the councilor for social affairs. This initiative aims to offer new opportunities for social inclusion to individuals in precarious situations, setting an example of active citizenship and opening cultural spaces to those typically excluded from such experiences.

The frescoes, divided into 12 sections, provide a symbolic representation of the zodiac signs, inspired by astrologer Pietro d’Abano’s studies. The works, originally carried out by Giotto and his collaborators between 1315 and 1317, were later contributed to by Giusto de’ Menabuoi. Following a devastating fire in 1420, which destroyed the palace vault, the entire fresco cycle was recreated in the mid-fifteenth century. Those on the tour expressed wonder at the historical and artistic significance of the frescoes, which offered them a rare glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Padua.
