Gandhi’s message against violence an inspiration for all, House President says


In the current difficult international circumstances, Mahatma Gandhi’s message against violence should be a source of inspiration for everyone, President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou, said on Wednesday, at a ceremony paying tribute to Mahatma Ghandi.

The ceremony was organised by the High Commission of India at the monument of Mahatma Ghandi near the building of the House of Representatives on the occasion of the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which is officially celebrated every year on October 2.

In her address, Demetriou referred to the close relations between Cyprus and India and the long-term cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

She said that the life and actions of the great spiritual leader of India inspired people and politicians beyond the borders of his country.

The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in favor of peaceful resistance and non-use of violence and his peaceful struggle against colonialism, always focusing on the
self-determination of the people of India, are a compass in the efforts to address with the complex challenges the world faces today, she noted.

“In the current difficult international circumstances, Mahatma Gandhi’s message against violence should be a source of inspiration for everyone” she concluded.
