Strasbourg: Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál declared on Wednesday that the Patriots for Europe group will oppose Ursula von der Leyen’s new European Commission due to its “backroom deals and poor decisions” that have led Europe into crisis over the past five years. Gál articulated the group’s position ahead of a plenary debate concerning the commissioners and the commission’s program, emphasizing the need for change in European politics.
According to About Hungary, Gál stressed the urgency of addressing issues such as illegal migration, centralization of the Brussels administration, “anti-farmer greenwashing”, and the bloc’s “pro-war position.” She criticized the new commission, supported by the European People’s Party and left-liberals, for failing to meet the demands of voters seeking a shift in the management and policies of the European Union.
Gál further argued that the “unacceptable pact” that outlines the next five years would result in “further illegal migration, war-mongering, ideologically driven politics, a
nd the blackmailing of member states” through withholding EU funds. She criticized the predetermined outcomes of commissioner hearings in the European Parliament, despite the professional preparedness of candidates like Hungary’s Olivér Várhelyi, whom she defended as competent.
The Patriots group, along with Fidesz, stands for change within the EU, Gál asserted. She highlighted that their voters desire “peace, an end to illegal migration, border protection, freedom from ideology, and sovereignty” as their primary goals, underscoring the need for a voice advocating for these changes within European politics.
