Furlani Secures Historic Gold in Long Jump at World Athletics Championships
Tokyo: Italy’s Mattia Furlani clinched the gold medal in the long jump at the world athletics championships in Tokyo, marking Italy’s first gold of the event and setting a record as the country’s youngest ever world outdoor champion.
According to Ansa News Agency, the 20-year-old Italo-Senegalese athlete from Marino, near Rome, triumphed over Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle by a narrow margin of five centimeters with a jump of 8.39 meters. This victory follows Furlani’s gold at the indoor world championships in Nanjing and a bronze at the previous year’s Olympics in Paris. Initially starting with a failed attempt, Furlani impressed with his fifth jump, improving his personal best by a centimeter to secure the win. Gayle took the silver with a jump of 8.34 meters, while China’s Shi Yuhao claimed bronze with 8.33 meters.
After his final jump, Furlani celebrated with his team and his Senegal-born mother, who also serves as his coach, draped in an Italian flag. He expressed his triumph by exclaiming, “Number one, we are number one,” to his supportive staff.
Furlani comes from a family with a rich athletic background. He is the son of former Italian high jumper Marcello Furlani, who boasts a personal best of 2.27 meters and acts as his coach. His mother, Khaty Seck, is of Senegalese descent and was a former sprinter. His sister, Erika, born in 1996, is also a high jumper with a personal best of 1.94 meters.
