Free Zones Cannot Exist in a Constitutional State, Declares Meloni

Milan: Free zones such as illegal political squats cannot exist in a constitutional state, Premier Giorgia Meloni said Thursday regarding the eviction of the historic counter-cultural and anti-capitalist Leoncavallo ‘social centre’ in Milan. “In a constitutional state, there cannot be free zones or areas removed from legality,” Meloni stated on social media following the eviction of the Leoncavallo building in Milan.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni emphasized that “illegal occupations” pose a threat to security, citizens, and communities that adhere to the law. She affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the law is respected universally, viewing it as essential for upholding everyone’s rights.

The eviction has sparked a reaction from Milan’s centre-left mayor, Giuseppe Sala, who expressed that the city council had not been informed of the eviction order. He described Leoncavallo as having “a historic and social value” for the city, suggesting that he would have opposed the order. Sala underscored the significance of the situation by stating that the council should have been informed about “such a delicate operation.”
