Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, emphasized his country’s enduring support for the International Red Cross during a speech in Geneva. He affirmed Hungary’s commitment to ongoing humanitarian efforts in collaboration with the Red Cross, particularly in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to About Hungary, Minister Szijjártó’s remarks were made at the 34th International Red Cross Conference, where he recognized the significant humanitarian crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine. He stated that Hungary, as a neighboring country, has been significantly impacted by the crisis, having welcomed approximately 1.4 million refugees since the onset of the conflict.
Minister Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s pledge to sustain its humanitarian initiatives “as long as it is needed” and underscored the importance of supporting Red Cross activities. He expressed Hungary’s dedication to international peace efforts in Ukraine, emphasizing that dialogue and talks are essenti
al for achieving peace.
The minister praised the Red Cross for its impartial operations and its commitment to maintaining open communication channels. He also noted Hungary’s firm stance that sanctions should not impede humanitarian work.
Additionally, Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s role as host to both the Red Cross’s regional office for Europe and the global service center of the International Federation of the Red Cross, pledging continued government support for these operations.
