Flotilla: Italians Detained by Israel All Well – Tajani

Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani informed the Lower House on Thursday that 22 Italian nationals, who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, have been detained by Israeli authorities. The flotilla was intercepted while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza for the Palestinian people. Tajani assured that all the detained Italians are in good condition.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani stated, “Up to now, 22 Italians have been detained.” He emphasized that the situation is under constant monitoring. The consulate in Tel Aviv and the consulate general in Jerusalem have been instructed to provide assistance to the Italian nationals, both at the port and regarding repatriation procedures. The consulates have been in contact with the legal representatives of the detained Italians since the previous night. The foreign ministry’s crisis unit is closely observing the situation and confirmed that all the Italians are well.

Tajani expressed confidence that the detained individuals will be repatriated within a few days. He mentioned having multiple discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, urging a non-aggressive approach. He acknowledged that the operations by the Israeli forces have not involved violence and that the rules of engagement have been followed. He indicated that the first repatriations could occur as soon as Friday for those who opt to leave Israel voluntarily. For those who do not agree to immediate expulsion, a waiting period of 48-72 hours may be necessary for the Israeli judicial authorities’ decision.
