Fire on Outskirts of La Maddalena Leads to Sea Evacuations

La maddalena: People were evacuated by sea Tuesday after a big brushfire broke out on the Sardinian island of La Maddalena, worsened by the extreme heatwave of recent days and fanned by stiff winds. Some homes have been evacuated on the outskirts of La Maddalena archipelago, off northern Sardinia, due to a fire that broke out near homes.

According to Ansa News Agency, people were rescued aboard patrol boats from the Port Authority, which is supporting Mayor Fabio Lai, who has decided to immediately evacuate the homes threatened by the fire. A Super Puma helicopter from the AlĀ  dei Sardi operations base is also intervening on site, coordinated by the Forestry Corps, and the arrival of a Canadair that has just left Olbia is also expected.

Initial information indicates that the flames, driven by strong mistral winds, developed near the sports field in Moneta, opposite the island of Caprera, not far from the homes.
