Budapest: Csaba Dömötör has criticized the obstruction of Olivér Várhelyi’s appointment as an EU commissioner, labeling it as “irresponsible” and attributing it to “ideological warfare” and a “petty political deal.” He emphasized that the opposition to Várhelyi’s appointment stemmed from groups uninterested in his vision for Europe’s health sector.
According to About Hungary, Dömötör accused EPP leader Manfred Weber, along with Hungary’s Tisza Party, of using the situation to pressure Hungary regarding its policies on the war in Ukraine, migration, and family issues. He suggested that Weber’s actions were in retaliation for his thwarted attempt to become the European Commission president.
Dömötör expressed concern over the delay in the commission’s work, noting that nearly six months had passed since the EU elections without significant progress. He defended Várhelyi’s qualifications, highlighting his five years of experience as a commissioner and the previous endorsement of his mandate by the European Parl
iament.
During a committee hearing, Várhelyi answered questions for three hours, showcasing his preparedness and expertise. Dömötör mentioned that another hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
