Farnesina Complains to Israel Envoy Over IDF Behaviour
Rome: The Italian foreign ministry, the Farnesina, on Wednesday summoned Israeli Ambassador to Italy Jonathan Peled and complained to him about the behaviour of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) who fired warning shots against international diplomats including an Italian vice consul at Jenin in the West Bank earlier in the day.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Secretary General of the Farnesina Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia summoned Peled to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to “protest and ask for explanations for today’s incident in which a diplomatic delegation of European Union countries, which included the Italian vice-consul in Jerusalem, was targeted by gunfire by IDF soldiers at the entrance to the Jenin refugee camp”, said the ministry in a statement.
Ambassador Guariglia challenged the behavior of the Israeli military, calling it “unacceptable that a civilian diplomatic delegation was removed from an area guarded by the military with the use of firearms”, read a note from the Farnesina.
