Many in the crowd shared personal connections to the late pope. Some displayed photographs taken just the previous day in the square, showing Pope Francis on the popemobile. A man who showed such a photo on his cell phone expressed his shock in Spanish, saying, “We were convinced he was out of danger by now.”
