EU Court Ruling on Albania Migrant Centres Sparks Concerns from Italian Government

Brussels: Premier Giorgia Meloni’s office has expressed concerns over the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) latest ruling regarding Italy’s agreement with Albania to establish Italian-run migrant-processing centres in the country. The ECJ emphasized that while national governments can determine safe countries of origin, such decisions must undergo effective judicial review to ensure that these countries provide adequate protection to their populations.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Italian government’s statement described the court’s decision as “surprising” and concerning. It criticized the ECJ for overstepping its jurisdiction and shifting significant migration policy decisions, like returns and expulsions of irregular migrants, to national courts rather than maintaining them within the political sphere. The statement highlighted the potential impact of the decision, suggesting it could undermine the autonomy of national governments and parliaments in handling migration issues.

The Italian government also pointed out the decision’s timing, just months before the implementation of the EU Pact on Immigration and Asylum, which introduces stricter measures for identifying safe countries. Premier Meloni’s office indicated that despite the ruling, the Italian government remains committed to finding solutions to safeguard its citizens’ security until the new EU regulations take effect.
