Earthquake was strongly felt in Paphos and Limassol, Geological Survey Department says

The earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, which occurred half an hour after midnight south-west of Paphos, was strongly felt in Paphos and Limassol districts, while it was also felt in the rest of Cyprus and across the eastern Mediterranean, Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has said.

The Department’s press release said that on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 00:30 local time, an earthquake of magnitude M = 4.9 on the Richter scale was recorded by the Department’s seismological network.

It is noted that the earthquake had its epicentre in the maritime area of Cyprus, 18 kilometres south-west of Paphos and a focal depth of 13 kilometres. The earthquake was strongly felt in the Paphos and Limassol districts and was felt in the rest of Cyprus. It was also felt/perceived throughout the eastern Mediterranean, it is stated.

Furthermore, it is added that the phenomenon is monitored by the Seismological Centre of the Department of Geological Su
rvey and the relevant information (seismic parameters, interactive maps, etc.) is published on the web pages of the Department of Geological Survey Department.

No reports of injury or damage from the earthquake, Cyprus Civil Defence says

There have been no reports of injuries or damage following the earthquake of 4.9 on the Richter scale that occurred 18 kilometres south-west of Paphos and at a focal depth of 13 kilometres, according to Cyprus Civil Defence spokesman Panayiotis Liasidis.

In statements to Cyprus News Agency, Liasidis said that from the very first moment the earthquake was felt, the Control Centre in Nicosia, which operates 24 hours a day, contacted the local authorities and the police headquarters in each town to see if there were any reports, adding that fortunately there were no reports of injuries or damage.
