Don’t Put Sinner in Dock Over Davis Cup Says Salvini

Rome: Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini on Tuesday responded to criticism Jannik Sinner has faced after announcing his decision not to play for Italy in the Davis Cup finals in Bologna in November. Sinner, currently ranked world number two at just 24 years old, was instrumental in Italy’s Davis Cup successes last year and in 2023.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini defended Sinner, stating, “I wouldn’t put Sinner on trial.” He emphasized that Sinner is a source of pride for Italy and urged people to appreciate having a champion. Salvini noted that there are many other talented Italian tennis players and acknowledged the frustration and envy expressed by some critics. He encouraged everyone to appreciate Sinner’s achievements, which are envied by the rest of the world.
