Doctors’ Unions to Stage Protest in May Over Healthcare Investment

Rome: Italy’s doctors’ trade unions announced that they are uniting for a demonstration in Rome in May to demand increased investment in healthcare. The protest aims to highlight the need for better funding to support the nation’s medical professionals and the National Health Service.

According to Ansa News Agency, the demonstration will carry the slogan ‘Invest in doctors to save the National Health Service.’ Various unions, including Anaao Assomed, Cimo-Fesmed, Als, Gmi, Fimmg, Fimp, Sumai, Smi, Snami, and Ftm, are collaborating to organize this event. The unions argue that the latest budget law falls short in providing necessary resources, prompting them to consider a strike.

Filippo Anelli, head of the Italian federation of doctors’ guilds (FNOMCEO), expressed concern earlier this month about the lack of resources allocated by recent budget decisions. The dissatisfaction among Italian doctors mirrors previous protests; last November, doctors and nurses staged a 24-hour strike nationwide. They protested against the government’s 2025 budget bill, which they claimed failed to provide adequate pay rises and investment in healthcare.

The government, however, has announced a commitment of 6.4 billion euros in additional funding for healthcare over the next two years. This investment is projected to increase national health funding to unprecedented levels, reaching 136.48 billion euros in 2025 and 140.6 billion in 2026. Despite these figures, the unions argue that more substantial efforts are needed to address the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare professionals.
