Denz Secures Victory in 18th Stage of Giro d’Italia, Del Toro Retains Pink Jersey

Cesano Maderno: German cyclist Niko Denz of Red Bull Bora claimed victory in the 18th stage of the Giro d’Italia, showcasing remarkable endurance and strategy during the race. Denz managed to lead a long breakaway, initially participating in a small group and eventually breaking away on his own to secure the win.

According to Ansa News Agency, Denz completed the stage with a time of 3 hours, 12 minutes, and 7 seconds. The chasing group, which included the bearer of the pink jersey, was more than 10 minutes behind. Italian rider Mirco Maestri of Polti VisitMalta finished in second place, coming in 1 minute and 1 second behind Denz, after winning a sprint to the finish line against Belgian cyclist Edward Planckaert.

This marks Denz’s third victory at the Giro d’Italia and his seventh as a professional cyclist. Earlier in the 2023 season, he achieved wins in the stages at Rivoli and Cassano Magnago, cementing his reputation as a formidable competitor.

Despite finishing approximately 14 minutes behind Denz, Mexico’s Isaac Del Toro of UAE Team Emirates retained the pink jersey, maintaining his lead in the general classification. Del Toro holds a 41-second advantage over Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz and a 51-second lead over Britain’s Simon Yates. The top Italian contender, Damiano Caruso, currently ranks fifth, trailing by 3 minutes and 6 seconds.
