Defence Budget to Increase by 7.2% Over the Next Two Years

Rome: Italy’s defence budget is set to increase by 7.2% over the next two years, according to the multi-year defence programming document for 2025-2027, submitted to the Parliamentary Defence Committee Thursday. The total ordinary defence budget for the 2025 fiscal year amounts to £31,298.4 billion. For 2026 and 2027, the forecast allocations amount to £31,208.6 billion and £31,749.4 billion, respectively.

According to Ansa News Agency, £15 billion has been allocated for weapons over the next 15 years, but it will be insufficient, said the document. “£15.4 billion has been allocated to the armaments and munitions sector, with a spending plan covering the next 15 years. The goal is to strengthen the production capacity of the national industry and ensure balanced development in all strategic areas,” the document stated.

The document shows that this amount appears insufficient, which is why the defence sector is focusing on investments that can give the sector greater strategic autonomy, coupled with research and development plans that can also guarantee an economic return for the country.
