Rome: Italian prisons administration DAP stated on Thursday that it is open to granting permission to prisoners to attend Pope Francis’s funeral at St. Peter’s on Saturday. The administration has expressed its full availability to provide special immediate permissions, contingent on meeting certain conditions, for prisoners wishing to attend the funeral.

According to Ansa News Agency, the process requires a positive opinion from the surveillance court before the prison administration can evaluate and potentially grant such permissions. The DAP’s willingness to facilitate prisoner attendance underscores its commitment to respecting the spiritual desires of inmates, within the framework of legal and procedural guidelines.

Additionally, there is consideration within some penitentiary institutions to allow prisoners to follow the funeral live on television in common rooms.
