Daniela Fumarola Elected as New General Secretary of CISL

Rome: Daniela Fumarola has been elected the new general secretary of the CISL trade union, Italy’s second-largest, succeeding Luigi Sbarra, who has stepped down upon reaching the 65-year age limit for the position.

According to Ansa News Agency, Taranto-born Fumarola, 59, has steadily climbed the ranks of CISL over the past three decades. She began her journey after obtaining a psychology degree from Milan’s Cattolica University. Her election marks a significant leadership transition for the union, which has a rich history of political affiliations.

CISL, historically linked to the now-defunct Christian Democrat Party, stands as Italy’s second-largest trade union federation, following the left-leaning CIGL. CIGL, once associated with the Italian Communist Party (PCI), is now connected to its successor, the center-left Democratic Party. The third major union in Italy, UIL, was historically aligned with the Socialist Party (PSI).

In addition to these, there is another union, UGL, which maintains ties with right-wing parties. This landscape of unions reflects the diverse political influences within Italy’s labor movement.
