Cyprus’ House President meets new Qatari Ambassador
Cyprus’ and Qatar’s contribution to the efforts for the prevalence of peace and stability for the benefit of the states and peoples of the region was discussed by the House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou, and new Ambassador of Qatar to Cyprus, Yousef Sultan Laram in a meeting on Wednesday.
According to an announcement by the House of Representatives, Demetriou ‘expressed satisfaction’ for the continuous strengthening of relations between the two countries, based on common principles and the commitment to respect for international law, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. She also underlined the importance of further strengthening dialogue and cooperation at the level of the two Parliaments as well, through increased exchanges at all levels, it adds.
Referring to the current developments regarding the Cyprus problem, the President of the Parliament ‘underlined our side’s commitment to the resumption of negotiations for reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem, based on a bi-
zonal bi-communal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions’. Turkey’s claims for a two-state solution in Cyprus cannot be accepted, as they would legitimise the faits accomplis of the Turkish invasion and occupation, she said.
According to the announcement, the Qatari Ambassador ‘underlined’ his country’s commitment to the UN Charter and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He also noted that Qatar is taking mediation initiatives and playing a constructive role in this direction, it adds.
It is noted that during the meeting, concern was expressed by both sides about the escalation of tensions in the Middle East and its consequences for the entire region and especially for the smaller states, such as Cyprus and Qatar, with the Speaker of the Parliament particularly pointing out the possibility of further increase in migration flows to Cyprus.

The joint will to continue the cordial cooperation between the House of Representatives and the Embassy of Qatar was underlined while ways to further promote cooperation and exchanges at the parliamentary level were discussed, the announcement concludes.
