Cyprus government decides to remove Green Line fence, Justice Minister says

The Police will perform increased patrols as well as surveillance using cameras following the removal of the fence at the Green Line, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis said on Friday, in statements to the media, following a meeting he had with the new Auditor General, Andreas Papaconstantinou.

The fence was installed in 2021 to curb migratory flows from the territories Cyprus occupied since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

Asked whether patrols would be increased and whether other measures would be taken following the decision to remove the fence from the Green Line, the Justice Minister said that “during its last meeting, the Council of Ministers decided to remove the barbed wire fence, since on the basis of a detailed and analytical report by the Police, it appeared that this measure did not have the expected results.”

He added that “at the same time it has been decided that this fence will be used by the National Guard, while the Police will perform increased patrols and also surveillance t
hrough cameras in that section’.
