Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni emphasized on Sunday that despite the varying identities within Italy’s centre-right government coalition, unity and cohesiveness prevail due to the commitment of its members to remain together. In a video address to the national assembly of the Noi Moderati party, a centrist coalition member, Meloni highlighted the coalition’s strength derived from its diverse political forces, each bearing its unique identity and history. She affirmed that the coalition’s willingness to stay together enables it to consistently find common ground and synthesize divergent views.
According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni underscored that the coalition is bound by a shared fundamental vision of the world, shared values, and compatible ideas, all aimed at advancing similar projects. However, the coalition has recently experienced tensions, particularly between the centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party and the right-wing League party. Disputes have arisen over issues such as a proposed Rai state broadcast
er license fee cut and the healthcare system in Calabria.
FI and the League are integral components of the right-wing alliance that achieved victory in the September 2022 general election, led by the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, of which Meloni is Italy’s first female premier. Recently, relations between FI and the League have been strained as FI, the party once led by the late Silvio Berlusconi, has surpassed the League in opinion polls, registering approximately 9% compared to the League’s 8%. Additionally, the League’s performance in regional elections in Liguria, Umbria, and Emilia-Romagna has been underwhelming, further contributing to the tensions within the coalition.
