Caution Advised in Starlink Deal Due to Musk Friendship, Says Nevi

Rome: The spokesperson for the centre-right Forza Italia party, Raffaele Nevi, emphasized the need for caution regarding political decisions impacting national security in discussions about a potential agreement between Rome and Starlink. Nevi, speaking to Affaritaliani.it, addressed whether Italy should promptly enter into a contract with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to utilize their Starlink satellites for secure government telecommunications.

According to Ansa News Agency, Nevi stressed that political choices must be made with caution, particularly when national data security is at stake. He emphasized the importance of evaluating costs and benefits objectively, without being swayed by political emotions or personal connections, such as the friendship with Musk. Nevi highlighted the unique services provided by Starlink but insisted that decisions should prioritize national interest over individual affiliations.

Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini had previously urged the government to proceed with an agreement with SpaceX, citing improved national security as a key benefit of Starlink’s 7,000 satellites. Salvini dismissed any notion of preference for Musk, stating that the decision should be based solely on Italy’s security needs, rather than alliances with other countries, like France’s Eutelsat.

Nevi, representing a party led by Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, acknowledged Salvini’s position but insisted on a careful evaluation of the deal. He clarified that Forza Italia holds no biases against Musk but disagrees with some of his statements, such as advocating for the U.S. to exit NATO. Nevi called for a pragmatic approach to assess all potential alternatives and emphasized that any agreement should be grounded in national interest rather than personal relationships.
