Rome: Cardinal Juan Jos© Omella Omella, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Barcelona, is gaining attention as a potential successor to Pope Francis. Known for his missionary work in Africa and dedication to solidarity, Omella’s profile aligns closely with the values championed by the current papacy.
According to Ansa News Agency, Cardinal Omella was born in Cretas, within the archdiocese of Zaragoza, in 1946. His name is frequently mentioned among those likely to succeed Pope Francis. With a strong presence on social media, Omella actively engages with over 10,000 followers on his X profile, where he shares religious content.
Omella’s educational journey took him from the seminary in Zaragoza to the theological faculty of the Catholic University of Louvain, with studies also conducted in Louvain and Jerusalem. Ordained as a priest in 1970, he served as episcopal vicar in Zaragoza from 1990 for seven years. His missionary work saw him spend a year in Zaire, after which he was appointed titular bishop of Sasabe in 1996.
His commitment to combating hunger was evident during his tenure as the national councilor for Manos Unidas, a Catholic charitable organization in Spain, from 1999 to 2015. In 2011, Omella penned a pastoral letter titled “Sowers of the Word, Missionaries of Hope,” focused on evangelization and inspired by the fiftieth anniversary of diocesan priests being sent to Burundi.
In 2013, Omella was honored as honorary prior of Our Lady of Valvanera for his contributions to the pilgrimage organized by La Rioja’s municipalities. He became a member of the congregation for bishops in 2014 and was later appointed as an archbishop. Pope Francis elevated him to cardinal status in 2017, and since 2020, he has presided over the Spanish Episcopal Conference.
In 2023, Pope Francis renewed the council of cardinals, including Omella, highlighting his growing influence within the Vatican. Additionally, he is part of the dicastery of bishops. One of Omella’s notable recent initiatives is the “School Ship of Peace,” a project supported by Pope Francis aiming to promote peace and coexistence among young people. Omella and fellow cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline are key figures in this initiative, which involves sailing with 200 children aboard, making them ambassadors of a new era of communion between peoples.
