Bodies of 2 Children Recovered After Mediterranean Migrant Shipwreck

Lampedusa: The bodies of two children were recovered following a tragic shipwreck of a migrant boat in the southern Mediterranean. The rescue operation took place on Sunday, involving a search-and-rescue vessel known as the Sea Punk, which is operated by an NGO. During the operation, 15 survivors were rescued.

According to Ansa News Agency, survivors of the shipwreck reported that three people remain missing. The survivors, along with the bodies of the deceased children, were transferred to an Italian Coast Guard patrol boat. They were then taken to the island of Lampedusa, Italy’s southernmost point, along with an additional 38 people who were rescued by three fishing boats.

The shipwreck occurred within Malta’s Search and Rescue (SAR) area, approximately 58 nautical miles from Lampedusa. The incident has left three of the survivors in critical condition. Initial reports mistakenly indicated that three bodies had been recovered, but subsequent updates confirmed the recovery of two bodies.
