BIIDPA meeting in Cyprus discusses issues of personal data law implementation

The challenges and obstacles in the day-to-day supervision of the implementation of personal data legislation were discussed last week at the coastal town Larnaca by the participants of the BIIDPA (British, Irish and Islands Data Protection Authorities) international meeting, organized by the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection.

Members of the BIIDPA network are the Data Protection Authorities of Bermuda, Gibraltar, Guernsey, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, Isle of Man, Cayman Islands and Jersey. The Authorities of the Isle of Man and the Cayman Islands did not participate in this year’s meeting.

An announcement by the Office of the Commissioner says that participants also discussed ways in which the role of Data Protection Officers and their cooperation with the Supervisory Authorities can be strengthened.

Regarding the fight against money laundering, they recognized that it is a complex issue, since data protection principles must be met both during the collection and process
ing of data. At the same time the intended purpose must be achieved transparently.

The practices and actions of the Data Protection Authorities were discussed, regarding the compliance of websites in relation to the use of cookies. All Supervisory Authorities underlined the different compliance pace between the public and the private sector.

The sensitive issue of minors’ privacy was additionally discussed, especially in the context of pre-verification of their age.

The next meeting will take place in June 2025 in Guernsey.
