It is more effective and efficient to protect the external borders of the European Union (EU) against illegal migrants than to restore controls within the Schengen area, said the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior and the Vice President of the KDNP at the farewell ceremony for the new Hungarian police contingent traveling to Serbia on Tuesday in Budapest.
RétvárBence Rétvári pointed out that as a result of the work of the Hungarian and Serbian police officers serving on the southern border of Serbia, migration pressure has eased on the section shared with North Macedonia, and human traffickers are currently trying to transport migrants to Croatia.
This circumstance, as well as the attitude of the Serbian authorities to return illegal immigrants to North Macedonia or Bulgaria, greatly relieves the burden on Hungary’s southern border.”

According to the state secretary’s report, in the period after the construction of the fence, the police and border guards serving there
prevented one million illegal border crossing attempts on the Hungarian-Serbian border, and as a result of joint work with the Serbian authorities, the situation has significantly eased since then.
Bence Rétvári emphasized that although there are still critical voices within the EU, the Hungarian government is receiving more and more recognition from representatives of the European Parliament and national parliaments for the work it is doing to protect the external border of the community.
He added that the land borders of the Union are significantly shorter than the internal borders of the Schengen zone, so it is more reasonable and effective to protect the former than to restore controls within the community.
The Secretary of State believed that Germany’s move to restore border controls rejects the very principles – for example, the possibility of free movement – on which the community was once created.

According to Bence Rétvári, the fact that almost ten years after the outbreak of the migration crisis in 2015, EU member states are still thinking about solving the situation, means that their previous idea of ??supporting immigration has not worked.
