Atalanta Narrow Gap to Serie A Leaders After Dominant Win Over Empoli
Bergamo: Atalanta are three points behind Serie A leaders and champions Inter after thrashing Empoli 5-0 away from home on Sunday.
According to Ansa News Agency, Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman, whom coach Gian Piero Gasperini labeled as the worst penalty taker he had ever seen following a missed spot-kick in last week’s Champions League playoffs against Club Brugge, redeemed himself by scoring twice. This victory boosts Atalanta to 54 points from 26 games.
Also contributing to the scoreline were Mateo Retegui and Davide Zappacosta, alongside an own goal from Emmanuel Gyasi that initially put the Europa League champions ahead.
Inter remain at the top with 57 points after securing a 1-0 win at Genoa, while Napoli have slipped to second following a 2-1 defeat at Como.
Meanwhile, Juventus solidified their position in fourth place, which secures Italy’s final spot in next season’s Champions League, with a narrow 1-0 victory at Cagliari.
