Anything other than talks’ framework cannot be accepted, says Spokesperson
We cannot accept anything that is not within the framework of the Cyprus negotiations, namely the resumption of the talks where they left off, on the basis of the UN resolutions, the acquis of the talks so far and the EU principles, Government Spokesperson Constantinos Letymbiotis said Thursday, in a written statement.
He further noted that President Nikos Christodoulides, as himself stated, has been in constant contact and communication with the UN Secretariat for a long time now. Letymbiotis said that the resumptions of the talks from where they left off is the main objective.
He went on to say that anything that diverges from this framework cannot be accepted neither by the Greek Cypriot side, nor by the international community, as has been repeatedly pointed out.
The Spokesperson noted also that the President of the Republic is making every possible effort, with genuine political will, so that the initiative of the Secretary General of the United Nations yields results.
Cyprus has been divided since
1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
