Amb. Davoli Highlights Anti-Mafia Cooperation at Quito Lecture

Quito: The work of the many protagonists of the Italian anti-mafia, starting with Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who understood the importance of international cooperation in the fight against transnational organised crime, was the focus of a lecture on legal diplomacy given by the Italian Ambassador to Ecuador, Giovanni Davoli, at the headquarters of the Diplomatic Academy in Quito to a group of Ecuadorian diplomats.

According to Ansa News Agency, Davoli then pointed out that it was no coincidence that the UN Convention on the fight against international mafias was signed in 2000 precisely in the city of Palermo, where the two magistrates were killed together with the men of their escorts.

On the basis of those lessons, for some time now, the Farnesina has launched a legal diplomacy activity, especially in Latin America, but not only there, to make Italy’s anti-mafia experience available to other countries, also in Italy’s own interest, the ambassador emphasised, given the close interconnection of the mafias of the various countries in the management of international illegal trafficking. Lastly, Mr. Davoli recalled the Italian legal diplomacy activities in Ecuador, channelled through the Itajus programme run by the Istituto Italo Latino Americano, which are highly appreciated by the Ecuadorian authorities, who, due to mafia activities, are today confronted with the worst rates of violence in the entire continent.
